I have recently become aware of the growing health issues with buying produce from the grocery store. I believe that most of the time all is good and we can trust our food sources better than any country in the world. However, after having suffered from arthritis I discovered that trying to stay as organic as possible certainly helped in my particular case.
I try to make weekend shopping sprees at the farmer's markets a fun hobby so I don't think of it as a chore.
I found wonderful websites that have several links to farmers "You Pick" operations. I have listed them in our area. I think it's a blast to do with children. If you take your neighbors kids one weekend they just might give you a break and trade you for a pool party on the next weekend. Also, strawberry season is December to April. Strawberries and pecans were always a welcomed treat at the holidays in our house.
